Ethel Thomas was born on April 11, 1933. She lived in Anchorage, Alaska, more than 52 years. Ethel was married to Eugene Thomas, who is deceased. She is survived by her younger brother, Percy Hall. She raised seven children. Ethel has eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ethel attended Greater Friendship Baptist Church for more than 50 years before going the Muldoon Community Assembly. She served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher, over the benevolent committee, and sung in the choir and served on other committees the entire time. Ethel was very active in MCA church. She prayed daily for many people for healing, guidance, etc. Many people came to her for healing prayer. Ethel volunteered weekly at the Anchorage Jail and Hiland Prison for more than 40 years. She led weekly Bible studies, preached sermons and visited with thousands of people in dire need of love and tools to change. She worked with the chaplains and was well respected by those in authority at all the prison facilities she attended. She was vivacious, always extremely well put together, well-prepared, continually cheery and always had a smile. Ethel received the 2017 Bridge Builders' Excellence in Community Service Award from Governor Bill Walker and the 2018 Lady's Volunteer of the Year Awards from First Lady Donna Walker. She received many of community and church awards over the 40-plus years. Nine times since 1991, Ethel had visited Jerusalem and enjoyed walking on the same ground as Jesus. She also visited Africa, Tanzania, China, Singapore and Indonesia. Ethel lived an exemplary Christian life for the young and the old to emulate.
