Dorothy Leone (Johnson) Estes died peacefully in her sleep at Trudy's Home on Friday, June 30, 2017.

She was born September 4, 1916 in Belding, Michigan the daughter of Lawrence Lee "LL" and Gladys Ione (Kelly) Johnson. Dorothy grew up in Lansing, graduated from Lansing Central High School and earned an Associate's Degree from Acme Business College in Lansing. She was employed at Estes Leadley Funeral Home in Lansing, where she met the man of her dreams, Don. Dorothy L. Johnson was united in marriage to Donald F. Estes on February 3, 1951 at Maple United Methodist Church in Battle Creek. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her husband, Don on July 4, 2008. Surviving are two daughters, Deborah J. (John) Dowdle, Deonne F. (Tim Shaw) Estes both of Battle Creek; five grandchildren, Cory (Kori) Dowdle of Grand Rapids, Bart (Janelle) Dowdle of Fenton, Stacey Smith of Brooklyn, NY, Jessica (Darriel) Alsobrooks of Battle Creek, Adam Dowdle of Kalamazoo; 7 great-grandchildren and another on the way; a sister, Arlene Brandt of Portland, OR; a sister-in-law, Norma (Jack) Wallace of Valparaiso, IN and several nieces, nephews and their families. In addition to her husband, Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Velma Volker Knowles and three brothers-in-law, Don Volker, Bob Knowles and Bob Brandt.

Dorothy was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and a former member of the Martha Circle. She was very devout, prayerful and enjoyed reading the Bible and read through it twice. She was a volunteer for the former Community Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed dancing with Don, playing Bridge, golfing and bowling. She will be remembered as a very loving and devoted wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma and sister, always putting everyone else first. She had an incredible memory, was a good businesswoman, very detailed, a hard worker, always forgiving, a good listener, maintained a great sense of humor and always had peanut M&Ms out for her family.

Friends will be received 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where funeral services will be officiated by Rev. David L. Morton 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 6, 2017. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
