Son of William Lionel and Cathrine Kathleen Antonie Ayliffe,
of Kangaroo Island, South Australia.

Burt enlisted with the Australian Infantry Forces on the 17/6/1940
at Whyalla, South Australia; his enlistment number was SX5311.
He was a prisioner of war and died on the 14/5/1941 at Caserta, Italy ;
he was a Private with the 2/43 Australian Infantry Battalion

In this family nearly all of the men enlisted -
William Lionel (Leo)(father) was with the 4 Garrison Battalion,
his sons Leo (10/48 Australian Infantry Battalion),
Burt (2/43 Australian Infantry Battalion),
Syd (Corporal 33 A C S),
Jim (2/10 Australian Infantry Battalion) and
Clem (2/27 Australian Infantry Battalion).
Only the youngest Frank did not enlist because he was too young.
Unfortunately, not only did Burt die overseas but his brothers Jim & Clem
both died in New Guinea.
