Donna was born on June 7, 1935 to Benjamin and Johanna (Scholten) Berghuis at Holland, MN. She graduated from Edgerton High School in 1953. She was united in marriage to Gary Tinklenberg on July 10, 1953. After 23 years of marriage, Gary passed away on August 2, 1976.

A new chapter began on June 7, 1981, when Donna married Kornelis "Cor" Bouwers in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They started their new family in Salem, Missouri and soon after relocated to Pella where they were drawn to the Dutch culture and welcoming community. In Pella, they ran a Montgomery Ward and Sears catalog store.

During Donna and Cor's retirement years, they enjoyed many years of motor home travel across every state in the United States, including twice to Alaska, every Canadian province except Newfoundland, and an additional 8-10 countries, including the Netherlands. Donna also loved to sew clothes for her daughters and enjoyed bowling in many bowling leagues. She volunteered on the Pastoral Care Committee and helped start many support groups, including Shepherd's Care Ministries, and THEOS, a group for widows and widowers. She also served as Sioux Falls Christian School's first secretary.
