Henry "Harry" Derr was born in Maryland, a son of Noah Edward Derr and Henrietta S. Gorsuch. He had siblings James Andrew, Clara Virginia, George Washington, Arthur Hammack, Dollie May, Noah Edwin and Edward Meise.

Harry married Alberta Primmer Oct 15, 1889 in Piatt county, Illinois. They had children Harry and Ethel.

In 1900 the family lived in Sangamon and were farmers, with four employees. His younger brother Edward also lived with them.

He was a volunteer in World War I, serving in Company A, Third Regiment, Illinois National Guard.

Harry was manager of Harris Farm of Harris Station near Farmer City. He died at 63 in the Bloomington Mennonite hospital following an operation for gallstones.

He was survived by his wife and son Harry. His daughter Ethel married William Tharp and died along with her child during childbirth in 1918.
