Walter James Atkins was born April 19, 1926 at Minier, a son of Eurvon and Anna Rosena Roudenbush Atkins. He married Noreen A. Friedewald on July 30, 1949, at Bloomington. She survives.
Other survivors include one son, James K.; one daughter, Debra C. Harmon; two brothers, William and Alan; two sisters, Elizabeth Biegler and Janice Riddle; and five grandchildren.
One brother( Robert L. Atkins) preceded him in death.
Mr. Atkins was a self-employed carpenter, retiring in Aprill 1988. Previously he had been a dispatch clerk at The Pantagraph.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War and a member of the Louis E. Davis American Legion Post 56, Bloomington.
Mr. Atkins was a member of Holy Trinity Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 574, Bloomington.
He was a volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, to which memorials may be made.
