James R. “Jim” Elmer, 73, of Freeport, died Friday, January 11, 2019 from complications following a stroke he suffered in late October. Jim was born December 19, 1945 in Monroe, Wisconsin, the son of Fred and Flora (Bowles) Elmer. He married MaryAnn Byrnes Brinkmeier on May 20, 1989.

Jim had a big heart and would do anything to help others. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed building and flying Radio Controlled Model Airplanes, fishing and fixing anything mechanical. If you told him “It can’t be done”, he would work until he proved it could. If Jim was there, you knew it was going to be a good time. He loved driving around the back country roads checking out changes that occurred over the years. Jim drove semi- truck 22 years for Monroe Truck Equipment and covered over 2 million miles. Before that he drove grain trucks for Buck’s Mill and Green County Express. Jim enjoyed racing cars and was a natural at figuring out how to get the most out of any engine. Jim’s Memberships included First Lutheran Church, Freeport RC Modelers and Freeport Eagles Aerie # 679. He is an alumnus of the Orangeville Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving is his wife, Mary Ann Elmer of Freeport; brothers, Warren (Betty) Elmer of Orangeville, Charles (Margaret) Elmer of Littleton, Colorado, and Robert (Terry) Elmer of Davis; sisters, Donna (Bill) Frakes of Freeport, Nancy (Brian) McKitrick of Sand Point, Idaho, and Annette (John) Nickles of Van Alstyne, Texas; nephews, Dante (Brooke) Jake, Chris, Matt, and Ted Elmer, Greg (Jill) Janssen, Chad Frakes, Andy (Tammy) Byrnes; nieces, Mindy (Jeremy) Grayewski, Cyndy Janssen, Dana (Rick) McKinney, Lori Kump, and Amy Byrnes; 11 great nieces and nephews, and two special boys who will arrive in March; also surviving are brother-in-laws, Robert Janssen and Jim (Pilan) Byrnes.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Eleanor Janssen.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday January 18, 2019 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. Rev. Keith Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Burke Tubbs. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Orangeville Fire Department. Please sign Jim’s guestbook and share a memory at www.burketubbs.com
