Funeral Services Held For Valley Pioneer At Grover Saturday
The passing of James August Anderson, pioneer, closes another chapter in the history of the old West.
To call this man a pioneer is to give the word full-freighted meaning, for here was a man deep-rooted in the cattle and the sheep ranges of the West. "Aug" Anderson was a true cowboy "with the gentle voice and clear friendly eyes which have not been dulled by too much reading of print-the real thing, far removed from the vulgarities of film and fiction."
To have known him and heard his clear accounts of the days of trailing cattle from the Blackfoot River through Montana to Canada; of herding sheep in the Wyoming deserts was to hear real adventures of a man without fear, simple, modest, and direct.
His horsemanship and his well equipped well-trained horses could be the envy of many of the would-be Westerners.
His early life stands out far more exciting than most of those we read about or see in the movies.
James August Anderson was born December 28, 1877 at Brigham City, Utah in the home of Lorenzo Snow, a former president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His parents were Andrew P. and Margaret Epson Anderson.
He spent his early years in Montana, Utah and Chesterfield, Idaho. In 1891 he moved with his family to Star Valley. grover was his home until he died on November 12, 1952, at the age of 74 after a lingering illness.
Mr Anderson married Mary Collings, July 2, 1919 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Surviving are his widow; three daughters, Marie who teaches school at Clearfield Utah; Elva who is a member of the faculty of the Star Valley High School; and Margaret Renee, who is attending the BYU; the following sisters; Mrs Luella Griffeth and Mrs Lennie Elvon Astle both of Salt Lake City; Mrs Mahonri Hurd, Auburn; Mrs Iva Astle of Green River Wyoming; and the following half-brothers and sisters; Lee and Urban Anderson, both of Salt Lake City and Mrs Emma Johnson, Brigham City Utah. Mr and Mrs Anderson were foster parents to Nels Jensen who now resides in Oregon and who attended the funeral with his family.
Impressive funeral services were held in the Grover Ward Chapel, Saturday, November 15, Bishop Jay L. Hepworth, presiding. Interment was in the Grover cemetery.
