She was born in Dalton. Georgia, in the Dawnville town to the late Ivan Agnes Neal and the late Ivan E. CarsonSr. She was married to Daniel J. Helbeck of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for 59 years.* Mary Kathryn grew up on a large working farm in Dawnville along with her brothers, Ivan Jr., Joseph, Harold and Willard and her sister Janelle.
Mary Kathryn was an ardent, loving and compassionate wife and mother, keeping her life faithful to the Lord. Originally she wanted to pursue journalism or book puiblishing but that was not an option for females in the 1950's, so instead she graduated with a degree in home economics from the University of Georgia, Athens. Mary Kathryn taught home economics at Jonesboro High School, in Jonesboro, Georgia, in the 1950's. She also enjoyed cooking, history, genealogy, horse races and Bible studies. The Carson family are founding members of the Hebron Presbyterian Church in Commerce, Georgia.
Surviving are her daughters, Stephanie Helbeck Cornfield of Matthews and Victoria Helbeck Hoin of Landrum; son-in-law, Johnathon Hoin of Landrum; grandsons, Jon August Hoin of St. Matthews and Harris Burton Hoin of Savannah; brother and sister-in-law, Ivan Carson, Jr. and Betty and sister, Janelle Carson Bridges of Kennesaw, Georgia. Additionally, her grandson, Jon August Hoin is local pastor of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church, West Bethel Church, and East Bethel Church in Calhoun County.
Celebration of Life Service was held Saturday, February 2, 2019, 11:00 a.m. at Hebron Presbyterian Church, Commerce, Georgia.
The family of Mary Kathryn Carson Helbeck are first generation members of Hebron Presbyterian Church. Walter Harrison Carson served as an elder of Hebron Presbyterian in 1859. Hebron Presbyterian provided a church home and final resting place for Walter Harrison Carson and his wife, Rebecca Narcissus Martin (great grandfather and great grandmother of Willard, Harold, Joe, Mary Kathryn, Janelle and Ivan Jr.) Hebron was also home for the Burns and Neal families.
Hebron is listed in the American Presbyterian/Reformed Historical Sites Registry by the Presbyterian Historical Society. The first Sunday School class in North Georgia was at Hebron in 1819.
