Altabel Mankey, daughter of James L. and Elizabeth Ann Mankey, was born April 5, 1882, at Village Creek, Iowa, and passed away at Newell, Iowa, on September 5, 1968, at the age of 86 years and five months. She received her education in the Newell Public School, graduating in the class of 1900. That fall she started teaching in a one room country school east of Newell. She was so successful that the Newell School Board in 1910 asked her to teach in the town school. A country schoolhouse was moved in and placed south Of the school’s east wing to accommodate her first class. She taught in the Newell community for 45 years, 35 years of that period in the town of Newell, and 33 years of that time as the second grade teacher. When she retired in 1948, a party of appreciation was held at the School House in her honor and the large attendance bore tribute as to the love and respect the entire community felt for her. In 1958, the Senior Class, which had been the last group to have Miss Mankey as their second grade teacher, presented her with a gift of appreciation. Miss Mankey was a faithful and lifelong member of the Congregational Church, Newell, and was always generous with her many talents in any capacity. For many years she was an active participant in the music ministry of the church]. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her sisters, Caddie Foley, Jean Conley, and Grace Leachman. She is survived by three nephews: Robert Leachman and Billie Leachman, Strawberry Point; Jean Leachman New Virginia; and one niece, Mrs. Altabel Beckett, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
