Alan was born in Council Bluffs, IA to Henry Heiman and Nellie Leona (King) Heiman. He grew up in the Thurman and Glenwood, IA areas graduating High School in Glenwood.

Alan was a member of the U.S. Army serving 4 years of tours in Korea and Viet Nam where he was awarded the Bronze Star. After being discharged, he served as a member of the Army Reserve for 14 years.

Alan farmed near Thurman, Tabor and Farragut for many years. He was married to Belinda Sue Ball on September 10, 1982. They enjoyed auctions and traveling to see family in Missouri including those in the Cameron area. Many evenings were spent at Sapp Brothers Truck Stop making conversation with some of their favorite people.
