Canadian Military Officer. A 1914 graduate of the Royal Military College, Stuart was commissioned an officer with the Royal Canadian Engineers and served in World War I. With the outbreak of World War II he returned to the Royal Military College to serve as Commandant until 1940. In 1941 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Canadian Army, a position he held until 1943. In 1944 he served briefly as Chief of Staff at Canadian Military Headquarters in London before resigning due to ill health. He succumbed to his illness a year later while in Ottawa.
