John L. Schultz Jr. was born Oct. 5, 1924, to John L. and Amelia V. (Cavanaugh) Schultz Sr. He married Mary L. Schappy on June 19, 1948, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He served in the Army with the 35th Infantry Division during World War II in the South Pacific Theater of Operations. He received several commendations and awards. He graduated from the former St. Ambrose Academy. He was a member of the church and had been a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 532, Davenport, and 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus Loras General Assembly. John retired first from Sears Distribution Center and again from the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency. He had been active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as scoutmaster of Troop 664 from 1977 until 1986. During that time, 17 boys achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a vigil member of "The Order of the Arrow."
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association-Mississippi Valley Chapter or the Our Lady of Victory Remodeling Fund. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mary; a daughter, Susan Kelly, Taos, N.M.; a son and daughter-in-law, John L. Schultz III and his wife, Crysta, Long Grove, Iowa; grandchildren, John Gabe and Zachary Louis; and sisters, Rosaria Brooks, Cozie Diaz and Judy Janney, all of Davenport. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by, his twin sister, Mary Rita, a sister, Ann Lacy, and a brother, William, Nov. 12, 1998. May they rest in peace.
