Edward Buckner Sutherland was the eldest son of Edward Sutherland and Christiana Coffin. He grew up in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where his father served as Town Major. He married Hester Tresilian in Sydney on October 28, 1851. According to a newspaper notice announcing their marriage, Edward was a "barrister at law". They had two children, Bessie and Edward.

Notice of death in The Gentleman's Magazine and Historical Review: "At Cape Breton, by the upsetting of a boat, E.B. Sutherland, esq., eldest son of Edward Sutherland esq. Fort Major, and grandson of the late Rev. James Coffin, Vicar of Linkinhorne, Cornwall." He was buried at Saint George's Anglican Church Cemetery June 22, 1854.
