Alfred was the fifth child of Edward Sutherland and Christiana Coffin. He was baptized on March 16, 1835, in St. George's Church, Sydney, Cape Breton, where his father was Town Major. He died at the age of three and was buried February 18,1838, at Saint George's Anglican Church Cemetery, Sydney.
