George M. Kelly, 86, a resident of Columbus, Indiana, passed from this life at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2020 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Mr. Kelly was born February 25, 1934, in Columbus, Indiana, the only child of Marshall and Virginia Perkinson Kelly. On September 21, 1958, George married Rita F. Cochran; she survives.
Mr. Kelly was a United States Navy veteran. He served the City of Columbus as a fireman retiring after 20 years of service. He also was a self-employed painter for many years.

Mr. Kelly was a faithful member of the Bartholomew County Historical Society, St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 20 F&AM and the American Legion Post 24. He was an avid fisherman and he enjoyed collecting toasters, post cards and Columbus memorabilia.

Surviving to cherish his memory is his wife of nearly 62 years, Rita; his children, Timothy Kelly of Florence, Kentucky and Jana Kelly of Columbus; grandchildren, Amanda Hammons of Ludlow, Kentucky, Justin Bunch of Huntington, Indiana, Wesley Barger of Versailles, Indiana, Lisa Kelly of Independence, Kentucky and Ryleigh Rayburn of Columbus; and great-grandchildren, Hayden, Kyleigh, Jaxson, Graystin, Avery, Zayden and Eden. Mr. Kelly was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Virginia Kelly.

Family and friends may gather for visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday by members of St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 20. The Masonic service will be followed by the funeral service; Columbus Fire Department Chaplain Ron Bridgewater will officiate. We do ask visitors to follow social distancing guidelines and masks are required in the funeral home.

Mr. Kelly will be laid to rest in the Garland Brook Mausoleum. Full military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Bartholomew County Historical Society.
