Johann's parents are unknown. He may have had a brother named Andreas, birth year unknown, who died on Aug 4, 1666. He is listed as the son of Jakob Benner, which if so, would make Jakob the father of Johann. Or it is quite possible that Jakob is a brother of Johann, or even some other relation - a cousin or more extended.

Johann Benner (Bender) was a Subpraetor and later as a Rattsherr (Councilor) of Gernsheim.

A Subpraetor - Assists the Praetor with the management of the Army, and watches over the other high ranks, keeping them up to date, and making sure that they know what they are doing. Subpraetori may promote, demote, expel, and recruit.

Johann served as Gemeindbuergermeister (Mayor) in 1641 and also as Rathsbuergermeister (Council President) in 1649 and 1662.

Johann married three times.
First was Anna (maiden?) died on Nov 24, 165?
Second, on Jun 9, 1659, widower Johann married Anna Kitzhauer, widow of Johann Kitzhauer. She died in 1665.
Third, on Sep 22, 1665, Johann married Margaretha Stepp, widow of Hieronymus Stepp. She died on Jan 16, 1666.

Johann's children include:
Johann, who married Katharina
Philip, Jan 31, 1658
Johann Peter, Jr (meaning our Johann may well have been Johann Peter), died Nov 19, 1666; he married Odilia Fischer, daughter of Martin Fischer. She died Dec 6, 1666. They had four children, Johann, born May 18, 1660; Katharina, 1661 - May 27, 1677; Anna, Jan 20, 1664 - Jun 16, 1726, who married Martin Wirthwein and had eight children; and Filius, 1666 - Dec 9, 1666, three days after his mother and nearly three weeks after his father.
Johann Phillip, 1638 - Feb 26, 1690; guild member; married Christina Huber/Hueber. They had 13 chldren.
Johann Jakob, 1649 - Dec 31, 1666; married Barbara, who died Dec 25, 1666, they had two children, who both died in Dec 1666, aged four and two. The Plague had struck Gernsheim.
