Death of Dr. J. G. Whittemore

"Dr. James G. Whittemore had a multitude of friends both here and elsewhere, who will learn with genuine sorrow of his death which occurred at his home in Glenwood last Saturday morning. James G. Whittemore was born in East Machias, Maine, February 29th, 1838. His mother died when he was five years old and his father when he arrived at the age of sixteen. He received an academic education in his native town and at the age of eighteen years he came to Hastings, in this state, where he studied medicine with Dr. William Potts. At the breaking out of the war he enlisted in the Eighth Minnesota Volunteers and was afterwards promoted to a captaincy in a colored regiment. In 1857 he took a homestead in Grove Lake, Pope county, and in 1864 he was married to Miss Mary Ann McNutt. In 1869 he was elected auditor of Pope county, and removed to Glenwood where he has resided ever since. He served as county auditor for three terms in a very acceptable manner. He served two terms in the State legislator as representative and senator. For the past few years he has been engaged in the banking and mercantile business. He was a man of unquestioned integrity, and had those qualities of head and heart which ensure social popularity and warm friendship. His heart was big, his sympathies active, and all his impulses generous and kind, as those who knew him at all intimately can well testify, and his family have to mourn a truly affectionate husband and indulgent father. He was a member of Constellation Lodge No. 81, A. F. and A. M., of this place. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his loss. The remains were interred at Grove Lake on Monday last, the funeral being largely attended." Contributor: Rose (47954131)
