Ann was born at "Viney Level", Loretto,. Washington ( ow Marion) County, Kentucky to John Lancaster and Catherine (Miles) Lancaster. Her grandparents were: Raphael Lancaster and Eleanor (Bradford) Lancaster and Philip Miles and Eleanor (O'Brian) Miles.

She attended Loretto Academy. She and her family attended St. Charles Church, near St. Mary, Kentucky.

Her nephew John Lancaster Spalding,1832-1919, who became the first Bishop of Peoria, Illinois, spent much time in her home.

She married Edward Baker Smith on November 22, 1826 in Washington County, Kentucky . Levi J. Smith was the surety to their marriage bond. Her father, John Lancaster, Esquire. gave written consent. The witnesses to his consent were Raphael Lancaster and John Lancaster, Jr.
