Emma Catherine Biars was born on 20 July 1878 in Harrison Township, Gallia County, Ohio, to immigrants Gustava "Gus" Biars (1850/1916) and his wife Catharine "Kate" Krause (1848/1932).

She had five brothers: John Phillip A. Biars, Christopher William Biars, Augustus Biars, Frederick Biars and Henry Biars. Henry drowned in the Ohio River as a youth.

Granddaughter Katherine Fox Nicholas shared documents with additional variations of their names:
* A baptismal certificate in German issued when Emma Catharina (Emma) Biars, daughter of Gustava and Catharine, was baptized into the Lutheran Church in Gallipolis, Ohio. Emma was born in 1878 and the document is dated 1879.
* Documents related to application for a delayed birth certificate for Emma Katherine Biars Runyon.

A participant in a German Genealogy page on Facebook wrote that the names on the baptismal certificate are Gustav Baer und seine Gattin (and his wife) Katharina Krauss. The application names are an attempt to decipher the German text on the certificate.

Emma Biars' first husband was Charlie Thompson, according to family members. They did not have children. The couple divorced.

Emma married George Washington Smith Jr. of Abraham, Raleigh County, W.Va., on 05 Aug 1908. He was a son of George Washington Smith Sr. and wife Catherine Bennett.

George was a widower with nine children. His wife Emily Alice Vandall Smith had died in 1905. Their children: Bertha Jane Smith Surbaugh, Bessie Smith Arthur, Glenville E. Smith, Wayne Smith, Arthur Jackson Smith, Ada Smith Martin, Ola Ernest "Oley" Smith, Charles Ota (C.O., "Smitty") Smith Sr., and Emily Mae Smith Hutchinson.

George and Emma had seven children: Kay Golda Smith Fox, Pearl Lora Smith Gwinn, Eda Flora "Edie" Smith Ellison, Earl George Smith, Everett Abraham Smith, Carl Eugene Smith and Ernest Sidney Smith.

Mrs. Fox, George's last surviving child, died at age 99 in 2009.

After George's death in 1940, Emma married Harrison Maynard. According to family members, it was not a happy marriage. I don't know if Mr. Maynard died or the marriage ended in divorce.

In the March 1946 obituary of her grandson Bobby Earl Smith, she was listed as Mrs. Emma Maynard. At some point after that, Emma married the Rev. Andrew W. "Andy" Runyon. He died 02 Jul 1960 at their home in Abraham, Raleigh County, W.Va.

Emma died 02 Jul 1960 in a Fayetteville, W.Va., nursing home. She was buried next to Rev. Runyon in the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Abraham.
