Wayne Smith was born on 24 Aug 1888 in Raleigh County, W.Va., a son of George Washington Smith Jr. and his first wife Emily Alice Vandall. Wayne had eight brothers and sisters and seven half-brothers and half-sisters.

He married Sarah Parthena Davis on 29 Aug 1910 in Raleigh County, W.Va. She was born on 28 May 1890 in Raleigh County, a daughter of Albert Davis and Launa Ellen Cook Davis.

Wayne died at his home in Bryson, Raleigh County, on 20 July 1911 of a gunshot wound. He was shot around 1:30 p.m. and died around 5:30 or 5:15 p.m., according to news articles.

Wayne said he was retrieving a shotgun that was stored in a corner behind a trunk. He grabbed it by the barrel and pulled it over the trunk. A news article said, the gun was discharged "in some peculiar manner." Wayne was shot in the abdomen. His wife, who was also home at the time, found him and summoned help. Dr. G.P. Daniels and Dr. S.J. Daniels were called to the scene.

Wayne was "conscious to the last." He made a last request that he be buried in the same cemetery as his mother. Emily Alice died in 1905. Wayne and his parents are buried in the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church cemetery in Abraham, Raleigh County. His tombstone, in error, says Wayne died in 1913. Find A Grave Memorial# 21382206.

In 1917, Parthena married Reason McNeal Biggs. She died on 07 Oct 1968 in Beckley, Raleigh County.
