Buck Edwards
August 30, 1934 - July 24, 2020

Carl “Buck” Franklin Edwards, Jr., 85, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2020, in his home while surrounded by his family after a hard fought battle with Alzheimers.

Born in Southampton County, he was the son of the late Carl F. Edwards, Sr. and Flossie Bryant Edwards.

He was predeceased by siblings, Sidney Ray “Speck” Edwards and Phyllis Belville.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Allene Spence Edwards; daughters, Jo Ann Murray (Robert) of Suffolk, and Tammy Jarratt (Lloyd) of Capron; grandchildren, Jorden and Jason Jarratt and Samantha Murray; and sisters, Shelvia Harrell and Barbara Story.

After growing up on a farm, Buck opened a grocery, appliance, and furniture store, Capron Home Center. He later joined the maintenance staff at Southampton Correctional Center and retired after 19 years. Into his 80s, he continued his second business of repairing and selling appliances and air-conditioners. He had a true passion for resolving mechanical problems and took great pride in saving his friends and customers money. He was well known in the community for his charitable nature and the memorable sight of his gray truck laden with refrigerators, washers, and dryers headed for repair or delivery. Buck served in the Virginia Army National Guard, was a founding member of the Capron Volunteer Fire and First Aid (1955), and served on the Capron Town Council. The family wishes to thank Mr. William Hart Gillette for helping Buck renew his faith in the Lord as his Savior through their many conversations. They are also grateful to Mr. Pete Pope for driving him daily for several years to Hardees and Dairy Queen, so they could enjoy the fellowship of friends. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the people of Capron, the town Buck loved, for tolerating his golf cart excursions and listening to his stories in his later years.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on July 27, 2020 at Capron Cemetery with Pastor Frederick C. Brockhausen, III, and Mr. William Hart Gillette officiating. Social distancing will be observed. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for people to follow in the “Buck” tradition of being a good neighbor and helpful friend.
