Howard was an ambulance driver in the 575th Ambulance Company in World War II and narrowly escaped the Malmédy Massacre at Baugnez Crossroads near Malmédy, Belgium. He wrote about his experiences as an ambulance driver in, "An Ambulance Driver's Experiences in World War II."

Married Betty Irene Gardner, 12-2-1945.

Survived by wife and four children, one sister and one brother.
