GEO. W. WILLIFORD
_____
Well Known Former Citizen of Galena
Was Killed at Oklahoma City.

The startling news reached Galena Saturday by telegram that George W. Williford had been killed at Oklahoma City, but no particulars were received till later.

It seems that Mr. Williford had gone to the above place in pursuit of his calling as a member of the Thiel detective agency of Chicago. He had only been there twelve hours and was standing on a street corner, when a runaway team dashed up to where he stood, the pole of the wagon striking him in the back of the head, causing death after five hours of unconsciousness. The Thiel agency was wired and immediately telegraphed directions to prepare the body for shipment and sent a man to accompany it to his former Galena home, it arriving here Tuesday morning.

George W. Williford was born February 28, 1848, at Fayetteville, Ark., and had he lived till Wednesday would have been fifty-eight years old.

He married Miss [ Minerva P.] Minnie Russell at Abingdon, Ill., March 23, 1871. A daughter, Mrs. Nonnie Clarke, of Denver, Colorado; a mother, Mrs. N. [Nancy] E. Williford, of Galena, and a brother, Thomas E. Williford, survive him.

He was a graduate of the Abingdon Christian college. After graduating there he was associated with his father in the mercantile business in Galena. They afterward conducted a hotel business here.

For the past twelve years he has been connected with the Thiel detective agency, of Chicago, and his worth to his employers was attested by their having his body prepared for burial and sending a man to conduct it to the home of his mother, a tribute to his memory very gratifying to the sorrowing ones here who saw his body consigned to its last resting place.

He was a Knight Templar, an Elk and a member of the G. A. R. Post of Pueblo, Colorado, of which he was commander for a number of years. He was also an ex-sheriff of Pueblo county.

During his residence in Galena he was a great favorite in social circles and was ever ready to lend his ability in making a success of private and public functions. Much of the former dramatic work of the Galena home talent was made a success under his able management and he was a leader in all kinds of athletics.

The funeral was held at the Christian church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. W. H. South conducting the services, the body being buried in the Galena cemetery.

The death angel has found the Williford home a shining mark in a very short time, entering therein and removing therefrom a year ago last December the father, and now the son must needs obey the dread summons. There are many in Galena who remember George Williford, who sympathize deeply with the aged mother and the brother who in so short a time have been called upon to bury their dear ones.

Mrs. Williford requests The Republican to convey to the many kind friends who have shown her such kindness during the time of her bereavement her grateful appreciation of their loving sympathy and their many acts which have been put forth to lighten the terribly heavy blow she received in the taking away of one of her dear ones.
