Martin Luther Allen
(April 1841 ~ July 20, 1893)

Burial: Sunday, 23 July 1893.

Martin L. Allen, an Old Soldier, Kills Himself With a Shotgun.

About 7 o'clock Thursday evening, while the family of Martin L. Allen, living on the Bonanza tract, were all in the yard, when a shot was heard inside and on rushing into the kitchen, a sickening sight presented itself to his awe-stricken wife. Allen lay on the floor [specific description deleted--he had shot himself in the head]. A double-barrel shot gun lay at his side.

The suicide was an old soldier and pensioner, about 58 years of age. He had lived in Empire and vicinity for eight or nine years. His mind had been affected for several years, due, probably, to injuries contracted in the service. He was incapable of doing any work, and seldom went away from the house alone. His family consists of a wife and four children—three boys and one girl, the youngest a boy about 9 years of age.

Allen had told somebody during the day that he must die before sundown but no attention was paid to the remark. When found, one barrel of the weapon that did the awful work was still loaded.

The case was immediately reported to Justice Ellis, of Empire, who decided that in as much as there could be no doubt as to the cause or the death, an inquest was unnecessary. The funeral was held today, and the remains interred in the soldiers' burying ground.

Biographical Notes:

In the 1889 Enrollment of Civil War Veterans book he is listed for about 6 months of the year entirely dependent on pension and family—and notes state “in very poor circumstances” with four children, oldest age 15.

Martin served for the Union in Missouri’s 49th Regiment of Infantry Volunteers, in Company I, as a Private. He enlisted December 1, 1864, in Brunswick, Chariton County, Missouri, and mustered in February 9, 1865, and was discharged June 14, 1865. His wife, Malissa, filed for a widow’s pension on August 5, 1893.
