Gordon Eldon White, 79, slipped the bonds of this earth and stepped joyfully and in wholeness into the arms of Jesus on July 18, 2020.
Eldon began life in Morris, Oklahoma, before moving with his parents, Bertha and Gordon White, and sister, Karen, to Seminole, Oklahoma, where he learned a strong work ethic. His first job was working as a “soda jerk” for Rexall Drug and was introduced to his lifelong passion for photography while working for White’s Photography Studio. He attended Seminole High School, where he met his bride, Carol, and graduated in 1958. Having a brilliant mind and as the first member of his family to attend college, Eldon attended Oklahoma State University, married his sweetheart, Carol, in 1961 and graduated with his B.S. in chemical engineering in 1963. 1963 brought big changes with a new job with Dow Chemical Company, the birth of his daughter, Jennifer, and a move to Lake Jackson. Eldon celebrated the birth of his daughter, Melissa, a few years later.
Research at Dow was one of many of Eldon’s passions, and his contributions at Dow led to four U.S. patents. Eldon worked for Dow Texas Operations and the Oyster Creek Division in research and management roles during his 32 years with Dow.
Throughout his almost 59 year marriage to Carol, his last words to her faithfully each evening were ones of love, no matter what.
For Eldon, the sun rose and set on his grandchildren, Zachary (Jenna) Genre (of Chicago) and Meagan Genre (of Lake Jackson).
A strong sense of adventurism coursed through Eldon’s veins with his loves of whitewater rafting, hiking in the mountains, canoeing anywhere in which he could put a canoe down in the water, and sightseeing through New England in the fall. His passport got a workout as well with travels to Africa, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and Israel. He was a student of American history which also helped fuel his love for genealogy, tracing the family back to, at least, the 1600s.
Eldon made the decision to follow Jesus in 2005, followed by baptism in Angleton, with his entire family there with him. Willow Drive Baptist, First Baptist Angleton, Bible Study Fellowship, and Community Bible Study helped build and shape his faith over the years.
Eldon had a very generous spirit — putting together bikes for kids in Houston, helping the search for pieces of the Space Shuttle Columbia in East Texas, serving as United Way chairman for the Oyster Creek Division, and helping to coach his grandson’s T-ball team — not to mention the many acts of kindness, both big and small, that he did for his family every day.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his daughter, Jennifer, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his daughter, Melissa (Paul) Genre, of Lake Jackson; his grandchildren, Zachary and Jenna Genre, and Meagan Genre; his “adopted” daughter, Marjorie Knighton, of Colorado Springs; his dog, Lady; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister; and grandson, Tyson Floberg; as well as his dog and constant companion, Magic.
The family will have a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association or the American Stroke Association. The family is particularly grateful for his caregivers and, in particular, Sarah Holmes, Maria Aldecoa, and Marely Cordova. Eldon’s ashes will be scattered near Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park.
