Martha Nielsen died of complications following childbirth. Martha Schmidt Nielsen was born thirty-eight years ago near Cedar Falls, Iowa, the second daughter of Jorgen and Marie Schmidt, pioneer residents of Black Hawk county. Her mother died when she was three years of age. Since then her sister Johanne Schmidt, has really been her mother. It was a beautiful thing to see how those two came to appreciate each other. She attended college in Denmark. For some time she attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, and Grand View College, Des Moines. In 1913 she accompanied her sister and father to Denmark, where she attended a college at Askov. Her contact with Danish people and culture gave her a great respect and love for both. She became particularly fond of Danish music and poetry. In 1921 she married A. C. Nielsen. They had much in common because their interests lay along similar lines. Their cultural background was similar. Three children were born. They are, Helen, 10 years of age; Carl, 4 years, and the Infant boy at the local hospital.
