John G. Brandon, 97, of Peoria passed away on Monday, March 24, 2014, at Lutheran Hillside Village.

John was born on Sept. 27, 1916, in Peoria, the youngest son of William and Edith Brandon. He grew up in Muskegon, Mich., attending elementary and high school there.

The family moved to Hudson, N.Y., and John then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces. He served with the 13th Army Air Corps as a navigator/bombardier on the B-24 serving in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1945. John received numerous citations and medals for heroism in action.

He married Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Reeve in 1945. The couple moved to Alliance, Ohio, and then Peoria, Ill., in 1947, where John embarked on his career as a life insurance agent. He was successful as an agent for 40 years.

John was an active member of First Federated Church, the Shriners, and served as a member, then president, of the Peoria North Rotary Club. He was active in Meals on Wheels. John also served for several years as a member of the Peoria Draft Board 109.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 2012.

He is survived by his three sons and their families, Peter (Helen) Brandon of Olympia Fields, Ill., William (Joan) Brandon of Peoria, Ill., and John (Laurie) Brandon of Kalispell, Mont.
