John Eskridge was one of eleven children of Revolutionary War Lt. George R. Eskridge and second wife Elizabeth Robinson. He was born February 4, 1804 in Fauquire County, Virginia. According to tradition his father brought his family to Mason County, Kentucky in 1807 and settled in Grayson County about 1811.

John married Sabrina Shrader, the daughter of Christopher Columbus Shrader and Elizabeth "Finley." In 1850 John's Grayson County land was valued at $2000.

John Eskridge died of rheumatism at the age of 53 years, 2 months and 8 days on April 12,1857 in Grayson County, Kentucky. He was buried in the Eskridge Cemetery on Highway 79 near the Falls of Rough River Dam.

His wife Sabrina joined him there four months later after her death on August 12, 1857 at the age of 52.
