Joel Roger Johnson, loving father, entrepreneur and musician left this earth to play his gigs in heaven on 7/6/2020.

Holding fast to the valuable lessons of opportunity he became a mentor for others and commonly known as “Big Joel“. Joel left a legacy and a path for his wife and children. He often said that God guided everything he did. He never had to think about how to do it. He just walked the path God that God laid before him.

A life well lived, Joel Johnson is preceded in death by his son Chris Kellison.

Big Joel showed signs of seeing opportunities at the early age of 7 when he sold a ball of aluminum foil he made to a little boy for 50 cents. When he saw the little boy didn’t want it anymore he offered to trade it for a dragonfly the little boy wanted from him. He traded the dragon fly so he could get that aluminum foil back because he thought it had more value. At age 12 he became fascinated with his brother’s guitar and played it constantly. He realized he would never be able to put it down so his mother applied for credit at Montgomery Ward and bought his first guitar. Through the years music became a way of life for Joel. He played all the big dance halls and venues for many years where he honed the skills of leadership and management. During those years he established life long friendships. At age 19, music and business merged when Mickey Gilley hired him to play in his band. Mickey was on the fast track with a recording studio and Joel once again became fascinated. It wasn’t long before he and his brother Jim open Sound Master Recording Studio which quickly became one of Houston’s top recording studios. Joel was bigger than life and made this world a better place.
