On 17 June 2017, Eugene Edward "Ged" Horton Jr., passed away peacefully at his home in Helena, Montana.
A long-time Bozeman and Gallatin Valley resident, he started life on 19 April 1930 in Peoria, Illinois. Born to Eugene E. Horton Sr. and Dorothy Danforth Horton, he grew up playing along the bluffs of the Illinois River and enjoyed summer vacations on Wyoming dude ranches. This began his deep love of the western landscapes.
He chose to make ranching his life's work. Ged attended Montana State College, and received a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1952.
At college, Ged met his life-long partner and Montana native, Pat Orcutt. They were married 14 June 1952. After time in the army serving in Korea, and several years farming one of his family's Illinois farms, he returned to the Gallatin Valley with his wife and two young daughters in 1958. The couple purchased a ranch south of Bozeman on Leverich Creek.
In 1970 they sold the Leverich ranch and moved to one on Pass Creek, north of Bozeman.
In 1986 Ged retired from ranching. He and Pat moved to Bozeman, where they lived for 30 years. In 2016 they moved to Helena, Montana to be near their daughter, Jane and her husband Doug.
Ged had many interests: He was an accomplished western landscape painter, enjoyed traveling to Europe, read books on American and European history, was passionate about classical music, art and architecture, was a docent at the Gallatin History museum, the Bair Museum (Martinsdale), and Virginia City. He worked with the Bozeman Symphony, Intermountain Opera and most recently, established an opera society in Helena.
Though retired from ranching, he found friends with horses and a love of the outdoors. He cared for their horses, went on rides into the mountains, helped with round-ups and branding and regularly met his friends for breakfast at the Western Cafe on Main Street.
Ged is survived by his wife, Pat Horton; daughters Suzanne Stedman (David) and Jane Horton (Doug Holly); granddaughter, Tiana Lake (Cassidy), and their two sons, Camden and Greyson.
Ged has instructed his loved ones that he did not want a service, nor a memorial. His family will be forever grateful to the kindness and care Ged received from the people at TouchMark-Helena and Saint Peter's Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Eugene's name are suggested to the Gallatin History Museum, 317 West Main, Bozeman MT or Saint Peter's Hospice, 2475 Broadway, Helena MT.
