William was a slave who bought his freedom and the freedom of his mother and sister. He was an educated and religious man who wrote the auto-biography, Narrative of William Hayden . . . Containing a Faithful Account of His Travels for a Number of Years, Whilst a Slave, in the South; Written by himself, published in 1846, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

William was born in Belle Plain(s), Stafford Co Virginia, to Alcy Shelton, who was enslaved by "George Ware", aka "George Waugh".  George shared occupancy of the 1,500-acre Belle Plain plantation with his brother, Robert Ware/Waugh. George and Robert's father - John Ware/Waugh, died 1783, when he claimed title to 39 enslaved people, which most likely included William's mother - Alcy Shelton. George Ware sold William when he was five, to John Ware, a likely son, brother or cousin to the above, who resided at Swan's Point on the Maryland Side of the Potomac.

William never lived with his father James, and his last name was not mentioned in the Narrative. James was enslaved by a "Mr. Daniel", likely the Travers Daniel who owned Crow's Nest plantation in Maryland, opposite Belle Plain.

John Ware of Swan's Point was a reputed gambler who owned racehorses and eventually became indebted, so he was forced to sell William, to Frederick Burdett and his wife Rebecca Cave, who after her first husband - Frederick Burdett died on 25 Nov 1795, was married a second time to Turner Richardson Haden Sr. - son of Anthony Haden [the younger] & Drucilla Rountree.

William is not known to have married or fathered any children.

William's mother is documented in his memoir, dying in Cincinnati, however his death date and exact place is unknown, but considering his devotion to his mother and not having any children of his own, he was most likely laid to rest by his mother, in Cincinnati.
