Mary was born on January 4, 1860 in Brandon township, Jackson County, Iowa, near the town of Emeline. She was the daughter of Robert Gaddis and Deborah Demming. On October 23, 1879, she married Johnathan (Chub) Barton in Maquoketa, Jackson County. For the first year of their marriage, they lived on the Barton farm. The following year, they rented some land near Berlin, in Clinton County and began farming on their own. In 1891 they moved to Rock County, Minnesota, and continued farming. In 1895, they moved to Lake View in Sac County, Iowa, where Johnathan worked as a buttermaker, and later had a dray line. By this time, the couple had six children, and three more were born in Lake View. They were living in Muscatine County, Iowa in 1900.

In 1907, the family moved again, to Pipestone County, Minnesota, where they rented a quarter section of land to farm. In 1919, they moved to Trosky, Minnesota, where Johnathan had a cream station and managed the hotel. Some years later, they returned to Lake View to retire. Mary died in 1928. That same year, Johnathan suffered a stroke and became an invalid. Johnathan died in 1938. Both Jonathan and Mary are buried at Ferguson Cemetery, in Lake View, Iowa.
