Johnathan was born in Jackson County, Iowa on August 2, 1855. He was the youngest son of Uri Barton and Harriet Wright. He attended the district schools and worked on the family farm. On October 23, 1879, he married Mary Agnes Gaddis in Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa. They were married by H.B. French, J.P. Mary was born in Brandon township, near the town of Emeline, Iowa. The following year, they rented some land and began farming on their own. In 1891 the family moved to Rock County, Minnesota, and continued farming. In 1895, they moved to Lake View in Sac County, Iowa, where Johnathan worked as a buttermaker, and later had a dray line, delivering goods that came in on the railroad.

In 1907, the family moved again, to Pipestone County, Minnesota, where they rented a quarter section of land and resumed farming. In 1919, they moved to Trosky, Minnesota, where Johnathan had a cream station and managed the hotel. A few years later, they returned to Lake View and retired. Mary died in January, 1928. That same year, Johnathan suffered a stroke and became an invalid. The final years of his life were spent living with his daughter Zada and son-in-law Garfield Sweet at their home in Pipestone. Johnathan died on February 21, 1938. Both Jonathan and Mary are buried at Ferguson Cemetery, Lake View, Iowa, next to the graves of Johnathan's parents.
