Inscription
Here lieth the body of Foulk Aldersey, sometime mayor of this city, who died the 22nd of February, in the year 1608, who was son and heir of William Aldersey, sometime also mayor of this city ; who died the 12th of October, in the year 1577. Post mortem cessat invidia.
Under this stone interred, here doth lie
The man in heart that lov'd and fear' d the Lord :
He on men's frowns or smiles did not rely,
But what his conscience told for to accord,
With truth he justice gave to rich and poor,
Both friend and foe held him a mayor grave.
