Benjamin Franklin Farmer was born about 1822 in the Pine Hills, in what was then Ouachita Parish but now southern Union Parish Louisiana. He was the son of early Union Parish settlers Mills Farmer and Susannah Wood. Benjamin was born near the modern village of Downsville. He married to Mary Jane Hester in the late 1840s. They farmed near Downsville in the 1850s.

Benjamin Franklin Farmer enlisted as a private in the "Stars of Equality," a military unit raised in Union Parish Louisiana in the summer of 1861 for the Confederate war effort. This unit became Company E, 19th Louisiana Infantry. Farmer officially entered the Confederate service with his unit on 11 December 1861 at Camp Moore, Louisiana. He was soon promoted to sergeant. Farmer's unit saw heavy action at the Battle of Pittsburg Landing (Shiloh) on April 6-7, 1862, and it appears that Farmer was wounded in that battle. He was absent in the hospital at Oxford, Mississippi in May and June, 1862. The July/August muster roll reported that he had died at Oxford on 1 June 1862.
