Susannah Wood was born between 1780 and 1790 in South Carolina, the daughter of William and Sarah Wood. The Woods moved from Adams County Mississippi to the Pine Hills (near modern Downsville) northwest of modern West Monroe, Ouachita Parish Louisiana, around 1810. Susan Wood had married Daniel McCowen in Mississippi on 15 October 1807. McCowen died on 7 July 1810, and their only known child, Daniel McCowen, Jr., was born a few months later, in October 1810.

Susan Wood McCowen remarried on 13 February 1812 in Ouachita Parish Louisiana to Mills Farmer. The parish judge performed their ceremony. Apparently desiring a religious ceremony, Susan and Mills Farmer remarried on 7 July 1817, with Rev. Ashley Hewitt, a Methodist minister, performing the ceremony.

Susan and Mills raised their family on their plantation near modern Downsville until his death in 1834. She remained there until her death on 21 October 1843.
