HESSTON -- Velma Schmidt, 89, homemaker, died Wednesday (May 21, 2003) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.
She was born Feb. 19, 1914, to David and Kate (Reber) Troyer in Crystal Springs. She married Virgil Schmidt Dec. 30, 1937, in Crystal Springs. He preceded her in death.
She was a member of Hesston Mennonite Church. After her marriage she lived in Crystal Springs, Attica, Hesston, Anchorage, Alaska, in 1975 and Hesston since 1995.
Survivors include: five sons, Charles Schmidt of Anchorage, Kenneth Schmidt of Ventura, Calif., Mark Schmidt of Magazine, Ark., Dale Schmidt of Chautauqua and Harlan Schmidt of Newton; four daughters, Genevieve Harmison of Oxnard, Calif., Joyce Twitchell of Elk City, Carol Block of Wichita and Alice Gardner of Littleton, N.H.; a brother, David Troyer of Hutchinson; 23 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was Saturday at Hesston Mennonite Church with the Rev. Cheryl Hershberger officiating.
Burial was in Eastlawn Cemetery in rural Hesston.
Memorials have been established with Rescue Mission of Wichita in care of the funeral home, 107 S. Lancaster Ave., Hesston, KS 67062.
