Doris Evelyn (Ady) James was born to F. Elsworth and Dora Katherine (Larson) Ady on January 3, 1933 in Flandreau, South Dakota. She was raised on a farm near Flandreau where she attended country school. After the eighth grade, she went to Flandreau High School. After her graduation in 1951, she continued her education at a vocational school in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she studied hairdressing. Upon completion of her education, she moved to Huron, South Dakota and worked at Frances’ Beauty Shop. On November 14, 1954, she was united in marriage to Harvey Carl James. Following their marriage, they lived in Huron, South Dakota, Nevada, Iowa, Murdo, South Dakota, and Pierre, South Dakota. In 1961, they moved to Williston, North Dakota. The couple returned to Pierre in 1976. Carl preceded her in death in 1981. After his death, Doris worked for Avon and remained in Pierre until 1989 when she moved back to Flandreau to care for her mother. Doris then moved to Pipestone, Minnesota. She continued to live in Pipestone until she moved to Ava’s House Hospice in Sioux Falls.

Doris died peacefully on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at the age of 87 years, five months, and 24 days.

Doris was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She often took time out of her schedule to do hair at the nursing home in Williston, North Dakota, and then at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Pipestone. She enjoyed playing bridge, and she also enjoyed traveling. She especially liked to spend time with her family and friends.

She is lovingly remembered by her three children, Tandra James of Mitchell, South Dakota, Terry (Demarie) James of Aberdeen, South Dakota, and Kevin James of Pierre, South Dakota; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Paola) James, Dottie James, Katie (Nick) Anderson, Eric (Megan) James, Kristi (fiancé Matt Schrader), Michelle James; five great-grandchildren, Arianna James, Zaine Anderson, Hunter, Karsen, and Zackery James; and many loving family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother, Francis; and her sisters, Arlene and Marilyn.
