She was the oldest of 3 girls (she also had 6 brothers: Irving Abraham, Solomon Jacob, Dr. Charles M. (1882-1918...died up north in the flu pandemic), Allan Lee, Walter Benjamin, & Harold Raymond) born to Russian Jewish immigrant, Harry Ryttenberg (1843-1901) & "Rosa" Anna Rose Nussbaum Ryttenberg (1850-1913). Sisters were Francis "Fannie" & Lucille. Some siblings also buried in this same cemetery. Hattie graduated Sumter High School in the class of 1895.

She married Isaac Calhoun Strauss who became an attorney in Sumter; but his obituary in 1952 indicates a different wife & his online will indicates that different wife was his second). Hattie's death certificate indicated death (stomach cancer) with cremation in Durham, N. C., and funeral under direction of Shelley-Brunson Funeral home in hometown of Sumter, S.
