Ruth E. McCallie Hamilton, 95, of Columbus, passed from this life at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2020. Ruth was born August 15, 1924, in Bartholomew County, the daughter of Roy and Monta Finkel McCallie.
Mrs. Hamilton retired from the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation in 1985 where she taught for 40 years. She received her bachelor’s degree from Franklin College and master’s degree from Indiana University. Before WWII, no married women were allowed to teach, she was the first married teacher to teach in Bartholomew County. She taught her first 17 years without missing a day.
She was a member of Petersville United Methodist Church and attended Burnsville Christian Church. She enjoyed reading, Bible study and traveling. Ruth wrote, I pray I can be remembered for the unconditional love of all my personal and extended family, my former students, my church family and most of all for my deep love of Jesus Christ.
Survivor include her daughters, Elaine Worton of Columbus, Maryellen (Rick) Pollitt of Hope, Debbie Garrett of Columbus and Cynthia Hamilton of Greenwood; grandchildren, Ian (Leslie) Pollitt, Amy Labadie, Travis (Kristen) Garrett, Tessa (Steve) Thorstenson, Dustin Carter and Piper Spurgeon; several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bryan Hamilton; brother, James McCallie; lifelong companion, Emerson Carter and a grandson.
Due to the COVID-19 guidelines the family is requesting a private funeral service be held at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home with the Rev. Marcus D. Speer officiating. We do ask that patrons follow the social distancing guidelines and wear a mask once inside the funeral home.
Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
