John Appel came to America with his parents in 1876. He was born October 28, 1857 in Schontal, Russia and Died December 18, 1932 in Great Bend, Kansas. In 1881 he married Marie Elizabeth Kleweno. This union was blessed with twelve children. Two sons, John and Henry, preceded their father in death in year 1918. His first wife, Marie Elizabeth Kleweno, died October 12, 1915. They were married 34 years.

John is survived by his wife Marie Nuss nee Krug whom he married August 23, 1920, a sister Mrs John Hartman of Otis, Kansas. From his first marriage; five sons: Jacob, Samuel, William, Herman, Benjamin and their wives and 19 grandchildren; five daughters: Mrs. John C.Schwindt, Mrs. James Frazier, Mrs. Sam Schwindt, Mrs. Adam Scheuerman and Mrs. Lea Wells and their husbands and two grandchildren; and also four great grandchildren. From his second marriage; sons Leo, Immanuel and Edward Krug and two grandchildren.
