Ken was born October 28, 1938 in South Western, Colorado – a place that is no longer on the map. He was the youngest of eight sons and one daughter, who died in infancy, Arlene Pearl, all who preceded him in death. His parents were George Franklin and Anna Winifred Carmack.
Ken passed away peacefully in the late evening of Tuesday, June 9th, 2020, from complications of Lymphoma, Parkinson’s, Dementia, then the Corona Virus.
He grew up in Canon City and graduated from Canon City High School (head boy) 1960 and entered the US Air Force. He had been stationed at Grand Forks AFB, ND as a Radio Repairman I and was honorably discharged after serving 4 years.
His first job as a civilian was at the Alexander Film Company in Colorado Springs where he started his career as a Cinematographer where he was working with the big cams. He went on with many accomplishments in the field as a Great Film Director/Shooter and was admired and respected by many for his professional work in the field of cinematography. As a friend and sound mixer, Wes Cavalier put it, professional “Kenny” was “spot on” and a master in his field. Those who worked with him over his 40-year career truly admired him.
One of his dearest and closest friends in the field was Jim Morrison, who Kenny loved, admired and looked up to. One of his many times he had worked with him was on the Aircraft Carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, a Historical feature and other works.
Many times, Kenny was hanging out of helicopters filming scenes such as the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, also over New York City in a Cherry Picker, then back here at the Broadmoor Hotel filming an episode for the TV series “Perry Mason”. Ken went on to freelance with cinematography so was involved with Mark Paglia, producer with the Windstar Studios, doing local commercials for companies such as Phil Long Ford and with the Bronco’s coach, Mike Shanahan, who “only wanted” Kenny to shoot commercials with him. Other works with Windstar Studios included video movies such as Elves, Alien Seed and more. He worked in Hollywood and all over the world including the Corp of Engineers in Saudi Arabia and with Paul Franklin, producer, who had his own company here, locally.
Ken was loved and respected by actors and co-workers who recognized him as a true professional.
He leaves to mourn his loss, Valerie Carmack, his wife of 35 years; Douglas Kale, stepson; his beloved niece, Sherry (Berry) Carter and family; nephews, Jerry, Dee and KC. His long-time friends, Jim Morrison, Duane Dieghton, Wes Cavalier, George Lino HS friend), and many friends and co-workers in and out of his field of work. He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepson, George Kale, Douglas’ twin brother. Also preceding were his sister, Arlene Pearl and brothers, Forrest, Gerald, Joseph, Clarence, Earl, Harry and Wayne.
We would like to thank the nurses and staff at Genesis, Pikes Peak Care Center and Chaplain Brent, nurses Stephanie and Melissa from Compasses Hospice for all the love and care in Ken’s last two years under their care, up to the very end to his passing.
