Bertha had to be the ugliest dog I have ever laid eyes on. Tracy kept her because she was the only survivor of Ginger's second litter. Ginger died in 2006, and Bertha grieved for about a year. In August 2007 we had a major drought in Dexter with temperatures well up over 100 degrees. We did all we could to keep Bertha cool and fed her three times a day and watered her multiple times during the day. I went out to water my plants before leaving for work and noticed Bertha wasn't moving. I called her name and she was unresponsive. I went to check on her and noticed that she wasn't breathing and that foam had accumulated around her mouth. It looked like she had died of a heat stroke.
