Berton married Lena Ruth Davis on January 21, 1906 at the home of the bride in Maxwell, Story County, Iowa. To this union were born 13 children: Donald Clay, Russell Lee, Mary Elizabeth, Margaret Ruth, Esta Davis, Harriett Lorraine, Nadeene Carrie, Gwendolyn Bertie, Elois Lucille, Ronald Clark, Oneita Gay, Clayton Wendell, and Wanda Lee.

Whitney, 66, who had farmed near here for 26 years, died at his home Monday evening of a heart ailment. Mr. and Mrs. Whitney would have been married 47 years Wednesday. Forty-eight persons attended a family dinner at the Whitney home Christmas day. Besides his wife, Whitney is survived by 12 children. They are Russell L. Whitney of Fort Dodge, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Cronk, Mrs. Oneita Hill, Mrs. Nadine C. Birkestrand, Mrs. Wanda Lea Lewis and C. Wendell Whitney, all of Cambridge; Ronald C. Whitney and Mrs. Harriett Elder of Elkhart, Mrs. Gwendolyn Sorenson of Kelley, Mrs. Margaret Harrop of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Esta Freeland and Mrs. Eloise Tesdall of Huxley. There are 24 grandchildren. Three sisters and two brothers also survive. They include Mrs. Roy Bell of Maxwell, Mrs. Bert Bell and Mrs. Ethel Bell, both of Des Moines; Clarence I. Whitney of Radcliffe and Carl J. Whitney of Nevada. Services will be at White Oak church south of Cambridge at 2 p.m. Thursday, with burial at Maxwell.'
