Gene "Geno" Edward Carpenter, 59, of Alpena MI, died on Sat, Jan 11, 2014, at home with his devoted wife of 11 A½ years, Ruth, at his side and beloved step-daughter, Carrie Adair.

He was born May 26, 1954, the third son of Harold and Lillian (Precord) Carpenter, who survive him, as well as his five siblings: Ron (Dawn) Carpenter, Ray Carpenter, Mary Muszynski, Julie (Larry) Sproul, and June (Paul) Kelsch. Nephew Chris (Janell) Muszynski and numerous other nieces and nephews survive him and special friend Jerry (Karen) Orman. Preceding him in death in 1996 was his first wife, Laura, with whom he fathered always-loved daughters, Chrissy and Jeannie (and her daughters Kennedy and Madison).

Step-son, James Lesser, and granddaughters Savannah, Brianna, Ashton and Mikayla, sister-in-laws, Jane (Sam) Wendel, Ann (Mike Page) Wendel, nephews and nieces; Matt (Melissa) Wendel, and Sophia; Gavin, Jen (Jeremiah) Bolander and Joeliah, Mike Wendel (April Dahncke and Curtis), Cousins Gerry (Diane) Swinford and Shelly, survive him. Gene always looked forward to Wendel family celebrations, particularly Thanksgiving.

Gene graduated from Alpena High in 1972, served in the US Air Force, then worked for the municipality of the City of Alpena for many years, the University of Florida, the City of Farmington, NM, and most recently for Goodrich Paving until his health prevented him from continuing in 2010. Yet in the most serious of circumstances or pain, he was known for laughing rather than crying, invoking his infectious play-on-words sense of humor to put everyone at ease. If anyone needed help with any project or task, if he was able, he was there - a loyal friend or family member in every circumstance, and always protective of those he loved. He enjoyed wood-working, construction projects, re-purposing materials, restoring anything mechanical, wine-making, smoking foods, hunting, ice fishing, road trips and gardening, particularly proud of the 19 varieties of hot peppers he grew last summer. In the words of his sister-in-law, Jane: "He was a true good gentle spirit in every sense of the word - irreplaceable."
