Samuel H. Canfield, G. A. R. veteran died at his home in Mount Glenn Thursday evening, June 28, Mr. Canfield was born in Eldred, McKean County, Penn., in 1842. He served through the Civil War, enlisting first in a Pennsylvania bucktail regiment and afterward transferred to the regular army, serving in the light artillery. He was in most of the important battles, including the assault on Richmond. In this battle all his gunner-mates were slain and he served the cannon alone. After the war he settled in Redwing, Minn., where he married Anna J. Fowler in 1867. They came to Oregon in 1873 and settled fifty miles from Portland. He was a farmer and stokman for thirty years in Idaho and Oregon, and also worked in the car shops for five years. He longed to go back to his old home and a few years ago he went to Virginia and purchased an old plantation where he lived a short time, and about five years ago while on a visit to Oregon he suffered a paralytic stroke which left him an invalid and which later caused his death. Of seven children, five are still living: John C. and Mrs. Mae Horel, of Teton, Wyo.; Mrs. Grace Hesse, of La Grande; Robert, of Butte, Mont.; Harry E., of Mount Glenn, Oregon.
