CARL STEPHENS

Carl Benton Stephens died March 5, 2006, at Briarcliff Health Center. He was born Oct. 27, 1904, in Quanah to Frank Benton and Zoa Ella Stephens.

He married Dora Evelyn Cox on April 21, 1928, in Plainview. Carl and Evelyn had nine children. Their surviving children and spouses are Judson and Jane Stephens of Apple Valley, Calif.; Joe Mack and Vivian Stephens of Tucson, Ariz.; Jerry and Mary Stephens of Amarillo; and Carole and David Cantrell and Beverly and Larry Warren of Greenville. Carl had 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; three sons, Don, Calvin, and Preston; and a daughter, Marilyn Sue Hutter.

Carl and Evelyn moved to Greenville in 1938, and he and his brother-in-law, Lester Cox, opened the O. K. Rubber Welders on East Lee Street. Lester returned to Plainview, and Carl and Doyle Currin ran the tire shop for several years.

Carl opened a Mobil service station on the corner of Lee and Walnut Streets, and he ran the station until he went to work for Collins-Hilton Furniture Annex.

Carl and Evelyn joined Park Street Baptist Church in 1940 where he became a deacon in 1944.

Carl was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He never met a stranger and was a friend to everyone.

A graveside service is at Memoryland Memorial Park at 10 a.m. on Wednesday with Rev. Robert Baldridge officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Peters Funeral Home.
