DETROIT-Merle S. Williams, 84, of Detroit, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2020, at home surrounded by family. Merle was born in Newport, Maine, to Charles and Lenora (Galusha) Williams on November 9, 1935. He graduated from Maine Central Institute in 1953.

He married the love of his life Brenda (Davis) on June 1, 1991, in Plymouth. He built the Detroit Roller Rink, “Spotlight Pavilion”, as a young man and operated it alongside Willie’s Cycle Shop for more than forty years. He was the go-to guy in Central Maine for any motorcycle repair and truly enjoyed working on small engines.

He was an Air National Guard Captain; he retired after more than 23 years of service. Merle enjoyed NASCAR and he and Brenda spent many years going to races at all different tracks. In his later years he enjoyed watching on television and rarely missed a race. Merle and Brenda also enjoyed their motor home and went camping a lot and traveled a great deal with family and friends alike.

He is survived by his wife Brenda; his five daughters and their husbands: Trudy and Ronald McLaughlin of Moore, OK, Cindy and James Endres of Martins Creek, PA, Bonny and Rosendo Longoria of Tiverdon, RI, Candy and Steve Murray of Roselle, IL, and Nicci and Leaman Temple of Detroit; 16 grandchildren: Bethany, Curtis, Rhonda, Elizabeth, Elisha, Anna, Isabella, Lucas, Isaac, Sarah, Jeremy, Abigail, Alexander, Jordin, Justin, and Rebecca; ten great-grandchildren: Lily, Jack, Thomas, Joshua, Elianna, Samuel, Pauline, Easton, Eleanor, and Simon on the way; sister and her husband, Marietta and Ernest Smith of Lenora, KS; sister-in-law, Barbara Williams of Waterville; and nieces and nephews: Sally, Deborah, Jay, Kirk, Kelly, and Kathy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Lenora Williams; brother, Arthur Williams; sister, Elnora Somes; nephew, Aaron; niece, Darlene; mother and father in-law, Polly and Bub Davis; and his best friend, Roger Eastman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 39 Grove Street, Newport, ME, 04953.
