Jack L. Adair, age 88 of Charleston, Illinois, entered his eternal home on Tuesday, May 26, 2020. There are no public services planned. Memorials in his honor may be made to a charity of the donor’s preference.
Jack was born January 23, 1932 in Charleston, a son of the late Floyd and Harriett (Shafer) Adair. He was named Jack Leroy Adair after a government official whose photo and name appeared in the local paper the day he was born. He is survived by his last sibling, a sister, Nancy Lawson of Menifee, California; two sisters-in-law, Lelia Adair of Charleston and Carol Adair of Morris, Illinois; his long-time friend and fellow painter Tom Garcier and wife Cheri of Monticello, Illinois; his special friend of many years and companion Donna Goble of Charleston; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his many siblings; his sister, Joanne Lawyer; two sets of twin brothers, Jerry and Gerry Adair and John and Joe Adair; a half-brother, Richard Adair; and six half-sisters, Marian Piersma, Esther Watts, Virginia Scruggs, Barbara June Bell, Jean Carlyle and Lorraine Kass.
Jack was a United States Navy veteran, serving his country from 1950 – 1953. Jack, better known as “Hog” to many was a painter and worked in Housing at the University of Illinois in their paint department from 1978 until his retirement in 1994. Jack’s involvement with bowling was more than a hobby as he was at one time part owner of University Lanes, owner of Charleston Bowling Lanes and manager of the Elks Bowling Alley. He was a member of the Mattoon American Legion Post 88, Fraternal Order of Eagles 3438 of Mattoon, Charleston Moose Lodge #1388, and Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592.
